More speed???

I was looking at the fischbowl today and saw a neat post (July 17)about internet connection speeds. Which sparked my curiosity in a number of ways. Check out my comment to see some of my ruminations about why speeds are not that important, but I am wondering why are we so slow compared to the other countries represented. Do we have more people connected? and does that slow it down more? Do we have much cheaper broadband? Are those figures valid??? Well, I guess I will wait to see what some others think.... as my comment said, I am not sure more speed really helps so much in the grand scheme of things.

Dave, for the moment I just want to say "did you SEE?" that your response to Karl generated a lengthy and quite interesting response. Go check it out if you've not yet seen it.
I can't get my hands on it now, but I recently heard something very interesting about the ways in which the big internet providers are more insulated here in the US than such concerns are elsewhere, resulting in the fact that the quality of web-based video transmission (for example) is much poorer in the US--even at the high end of service--than it is in many other countries.

Dave,

I am really impressed by your blog. Perhaps, over the break we can find some time for you to teach me how you have done all of this stuff. I don't have a digital camera, so that might be a stumbling block, but...

God, I hate when I see this stuff. It makes me feel really stupid. I feel that I am a pretty knowledgeable guy about computers and their use, but I just don't like them very much. I don't spend countless hours doing blogs and such. I would rather go to Borders and read a book.
